Special Programs: International: Study Abroad FAQ

More questions? Contact the study abroad office at StudyAbroad@drexel.edu or stop by the office at 3019 MacAlister Hall.

Why should I consider studying abroad?
As hard as it might be to believe-more than 96% percent of the world's population lives OUTSIDE of North America and Western Europe. Studying abroad allows you to better understand how other cultures view the world and will make you more employable in the future!

The successful future engineer will not only have knowledge of his or her field, but will also be able to communicate with people from other parts of the world.

When can I go abroad?
Drexel engineering students most often choose to spend a term abroad during their pre-junior or junior years. While not mandatory, we prefer that you have completed at least one co-op before you embark on your international adventure.

Many students use the summer between their first and second years to enhance their language skills in order to fulfill language pre-requisites for many study abroad opportunities.

Where can I go abroad?
There are over a dozen countries that participate in the GE3 program, including Germany, France, Denmark, Hong Kong, Turkey, Japan and Mexico, to name just a few. While not all of these countries have every engineering major, if you plan ahead and are flexible, you can most certainly find a country where you can study abroad.

Of course, engineering majors may also choose to go abroad on another study abroad program, including the Drexel in London program, SEA or one of the many programs sponsored by other institutions.

During which terms can I go abroad?
Students will find that every country and/or program has a different academic calendar, thus their study abroad term (or terms) will be determined by their chosen destination. The key is to begin planning early, so that if need be, schedule adjustments can be made.

What types of courses would I take overseas?
Through the GE3 program, students enroll in engineering schools throughout the world. Students take courses that have been pre-approved by their academic advisors and will help them fulfill their graduation requirements.

How much will this cost?
The tuition for studying abroad through the GE3 program and other Drexel-sponsored programs is the same as your regular Drexel tuition. In addition, students are responsible for their housing, meals, airfare and other costs associated with arriving at their study abroad destination.

If you choose to go on a non-Drexel sponsored program you may be able to use your federal financial aid to help pay for the cost of the program.

Depending on your chosen destination, you may find that you are eligible to apply for other scholarships for studying abroad.

When should I begin planning to study abroad?
NOW! While your pre-junior and junior years may appear to be a long way off, there is a lot you can do now to make sure that your study abroad dream can become a reality.
  1. If you're still in high school, take advantage of any AP courses your school offers. AP courses may be able to provide you with more flexibility in your course scheduling when you come to Drexel.
  2. When you come to Drexel, take the language placement exam during July summer orientation and consider taking a foreign language early in your Drexel career. While there are many opportunities that don't require you to know a foreign language, more opportunities exist in countries where English is not the national language!
  3. Contact the study abroad office at StudyAbroad@drexel.edu for advice on how to accomplish your goals.
