Prospective: Undergraduate: Student Profiles

MELANIE PATEL '06 (MSE), B.S./M.S.

Where she did her co-op: Rodel Inc. in Delaware, a division of Rohm and Haas now called Rohm and Haas Semiconductor Division.

Job description: Co-op engineer in Rodel's Poromerics division, where she completed projects as needed for the company's process engineers.

How she got the job: Applied after she saw it listed on the Steinbright Career Center's Website; she got the first job she applied to.

Duties on the job: Completed various projects with supervision from Rodel's chemical and mechanical engineers. "One of my primary projects was running experiments dealing with varying the viscosity of polymers; I had to make sure the polymer met a list of criteria determined by the customer. I also created a project schematic to consolidate roll goods in order to increase efficiency."

What she learned on the job: How to excel in a workplace environment; experienced an engineer's place in industry; learned the importance of safety compliance. "For two months, I had to attend safety classes and pass a safety test every week in order to be able to properly perform some of my tasks."

Job perks: Flexible hours-if she worked extra hours during the week, she could work half-day on Fridays. "The people at Rodel were very friendly, and so was the work environment. We even had donuts almost every Friday and Monday mornings!"

Salary: $13,920 for a 6-month co-op cycle.

Her favorite thing about Philadelphia: "The EAGLES! I love the new Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia is a wonderful city--there is always something to do."
