Frequently Asked Question About Drexel University

When is the deadline to apply?

·Students are encouraged to apply early and before March 1 of their senior year of high school.

How do I apply for an academic scholarship?

·There is no separate scholarship application.
·Every application that is complete is reviewed for consideration for an academic scholarship.

Is Drexel University a Roman Catholic institution?

·No, it is a private university with no religious affiliations.
·St. Catherine Drexel was niece of Anthony J. Drexel.

Is the tuition different if you are not from Pennsylvania?

·The university is a private institution and the tuition is the same for in state and out-of-state.
·It is not your responsibility to know the tuition along with all the fees.
·Suggest to the visitor that they ask for the tuition sheet when they return to the visit center.

Explain the difference between the semester system and the quarter system used by Drexel University.

·The semester system is 15 to 16 weeks in length.
·The university uses the term system, each term in 10 weeks in length.
·The university has a fall, winter, spring and summer term.
·First year students attend the fall, winter and spring terms.
·When each term ends there is a break of one to three weeks.

Can freshmen have cars on campus?

·Students wishing to bring a car to campus will apply for parking thru a lottery system and will be charged a per term parking fee.

Are there fraternities and sororities? Do I need to join them?

·There are fraternities and sororities and they have separate housing near campus.
·You do not need to join them to be a part of the social life on campus.

Are there religious organizations that I can join?

·Hillel, which is a Jewish organization.
·Christian Fellowship
·Newman Center, sponsored by the Philadelphia Catholic Archdioceses.

Do I have to live in campus housing?

·As a first year student, if you are not commuting from home, you are required to live on campus.
·Housing is guaranteed for freshmen.
·As a freshmen living on-campus, you are required to purchase a meal plan.
·After the first year, you have the option of living off-campus or remaining in campus housing.
·Also after the first year, you no longer need to purchase the meal plan unless you wish to.

Are the residence halls single sex or co-ed?

·The residence halls are co-ed.
·There is no single sex residence hall.
·The freshmen halls are separated by floors or wings.
·The upperclassmen halls are single sex by suite.

Can I have a single room?

·Single rooms are available only for resident student advisors.
·You can become an RA after your first year.

Can I room with a friend from high school?

·If your friend is of the same sex, you both need to write to residence life stating that you wish to live together.

Is there specific housing for honor students?

·Beginning with fall 2001, Van Rensselaer will become the honors residence hall.

Are the residence halls air-conditioned?

·All rooms have air-conditioning with individual room thermostats.

Do the residence halls have sprinklers?

·All residence halls currently meet the fire code of the City of Philadelphia.
·East, North, Towers and Van Rensselaer (known as VanR) have full sprinklers.

Can I live on campus while during my co-op?

·Yes.

How will I learn my way around campus and the City of Philadelphia?

·You will be invited to Dragon Week, an orientation week before the start of the fall term
·During this week you will be oriented around campus as well as to the city.

How many students are in a class?

·Typically, 25-35 students.

What is the faculty/student ratio?

·14 to 1.

How big is Drexel University?

·Undergraduate enrollment is 10,300 with an additional 3,000 students in graduate school.

In which athletic conference does Drexel University participate?

·The Colonial Athletic Association.

Why is a dragon the mascot?

·The dragon was part of the Drexel Family crest.

Are there club or intramural sports programs?

·Yes, there is a wide range of programs available.
·Check the sports information sheet and be able to name a few of the programs available.

What is the difference between the club and intramural programs?

·In intramural programs, Drexel students are competing against Drexel students.
·In club programs, Drexel students may be competing against students from another institution.
