Engineering Basics: What is Engineering?

Back to Prospective: Undergraduate: Questions and Answers
Engineers make things happen. They clean up toxic wastes, create computer technologies, build artificial organs, produce medicines, and design roads, bridges, ships, airplanes, and so much more. Engineers make life better.
Engineers achieve these successes because they have a solid understanding of science mathematics-and they know how to apply that knowledge. They take science out of the laboratory and put it to work in practical ways.
As an example, consider the difference between a chemist and a chemical engineer. A chemist performs experiments, seeking to develop a new chemical substance. A chemical engineer takes the chemist's work and figures out how to manufacture those chemicals on a large scale. The engineer understands the basics of the chemistry involved, and also has the "big picture" view of chemical processing.

Engineering is an exciting career for people
who like to make things happen.
