CEO
of Merck to Deliver a Lecture on Global Partnerships
Richard T. Clark,
Chairman, President, and CEO of research-based
pharmaceutical company Merck
& Co. Inc., will deliver a lecture at the 2nd Annual Dean’s
Distinguished Lecture on May 28, at 2:00 p.m. in
the Mitchell Auditorium. Mr. Clark will speak on the
importance of public-private partnerships in global health.
Global partnerships like those Merck participates in
help overcome the social, political and economic barriers that
prevent patients from receiving life-saving therapies,
particularly in the developing world. All are invited to
attend the lecture. A reception will follow. For more
information, please visit http://www.drexel.edu/coe/events.asp.
CoE Welcomes New
Faculty In
preparation for another successful academic year, we are
excited to announce that we have four new faculty members
joining us in the fall. Welcome to our new
faculty!

Rachel Greenstadt (CS)
Rachel Greenstadt will be joining the CS department
as an Assistant Professor. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University and her
M.S. and B.S. degrees from MIT. She is currently a
Research Fellow at the Center for Research in Computation and
Society at Harvard University. Dr. Greenstadt has broad
interests in both the technical and societal aspects of
computing with expertise in artificial intelligence,
electronic privacy and computer and network
security.
 M.
Ani Hsieh (MEM) M.
Ani Hsieh will be joining the MEM department. She
received her Ph.D. and her M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition, Dr. Hsieh received her B.S. from Swarthmore College and
her B.A. in economics from Swarthmore. She is currently
a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Engineering Department
at Swarthmore College. Dr. Hsieh's research interests
are in networked robotic systems and control and coordination
of robotic swarms.
Sabrina
Spatari (CAEE) Sabrina
Spatari will be joining the CAEE department. Dr.
Spatari received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and
her M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Her
research concentrates on the development and application of
systems-analysis methods for guiding decision making.
Currently, she is applying these methods to the study of
biofuel production technology. Her research interests include
renewable energy provision systems, particularly in
transportation.
Mitra
Taheri (MSE) Mitra Taheri will be joining the MSE department as
the Hoeganaes Assistant Professor. Dr. Taheri received her
B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Carnegie Mellon
University in Materials Science & Engineering. Her
research interests focus on dynamic characterization of
microstructural evolution in nanoscale materials, such as
metals, nanowires, catalysts, polymers and biological
materials using in situ microscopy.
Students
to Advance Future of Humanoid Robotics with Research in
Korea After journeying to
Korea in March, students RJ Gross ‘09 (MEM), Bryan
Kobe ’09 (ECE),
Clayton McNeil ’09 (ECE) Bob Sherbert ’09
(ECE) and Ph.D.
student Rob Ellenberg ‘12 (MEM) are ready to bring
the future of humanoid robotics to the U.S. With the guidance
of Dr.
Paul Oh (MEM),
the group plans to embed artificial intelligence and improve
the capabilities of full-size humanoids through the 5-year NSF sponsored project entitled
PIRE:
Partnership for International Research and Education. Over
20 Drexel undergraduates will each spend 6-months co-ops at KAIST to work on
humanoids.
CoE
to Co-Host Global Engineering Education
Conference We are pleased to announce that
the CoE, Office of
International Programs and the Office of
Study Abroad at Drexel will co-host the Global Engineering
Education Exchange (GE³) conference in 2009. Coming together
from all corners of the world, member institutions will
discuss the program in its current state, the developments for
student engineers and the future of study abroad. Consortia
members from more than 15 different countries will visit
Drexel University for the annual event from April 21 to April
24, 2009. For more information about GE³ please visit: https://drexel.studioabroad.com/.
Dr.
Alexander Fridman Publishes First Book on Plasma
Chemistry Dr.
Alexander Fridman, professor of MEM and director of the
A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute, has released the first
comprehensive book ever published on plasma chemistry. The
book titled Plasma Chemistry, provides a fundamental
introduction to all aspects of modern plasma science and
describes plasma applications to material treatment, organic
and inorganic chemistry, energy systems, fuel conversion,
hydrogen production, environmental control, biology and
medicine. More than a 1,000 pages, the book was published by
Cambridge University Press in the beginning of May. For more
information, please visit, http://www.cambridge.org/us/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=0521847354
Did You
Know? Drexel
University’s CoE hosts over 10 different summer
programs each year. CoE’s summer programs encourage high
school students, teachers, and undergraduate students to
develop a better understanding in engineering and current
research.

Technology:
Supercapacitors to Start a Revolution
CoE has the technology to produce
supercapacitors which can improve the performance of hybrid
vehicles, cell phones, PDAs, back-up power supplies, home
appliances and much more. For more information on this trend
in technology, please click here.

John
Chmiola ’08 (MSE) and Cristelle Portet (MSE), a post-doctoral
research associate, test the performance of a CDC
supercapacitor.

A Message From the
Dean
The
past year has been an exciting and busy time for CoE. We have
unveiled new discoveries, strengthened our research and built
on our national reputation for excellence in engineering
education. As our graduates join our alumni network of over
30,000 engineers, CoE continues to grow and gain momentum. We
welcome 4 new faculty members and look forward to hosting
world leaders such as Richard T. Clark, President, Chairman
and CEO of Merck. In addition, our students rise to the
challenge of research abroad in Korea to advance the future of
humanoid robotics. With a time of renewal approaching, the
coming months promise to be equally stimulating and engaging.
Please join me in congratulating the college and our
graduates!
- Dr.
Selçuk Güçeri, Dean
