ECE's Dr. Nihat Bilgutay Elected a Fellow of the IEEE

Dr. Nihat Bilgutay, professor and head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE). The largest technical professional society in the world, the IEEE is a leading authority in a wide spectrum of electro-technology and computers with forty-one technically defined units including biomedical technology and telecommunications, electric power and aerospace, electronic systems and vehicular technology. The IEEE is also responsible for producing thirty percent of the world's literature in the areas of electrical engineering, computers and control technology.

Recognition to Fellow, one of the IEEE’s most prestigious honors, is bestowed upon only a very select group after a rigorous evaluation procedure by the IEEE’s Board of Directors. The honor is only conferred upon those with extraordinary records of accomplishments within the IEEE’s fields.

Dr. Bilgutay also has a legacy of service within the IEEE community, including having served as the finance chair for the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing Conference (ICASSP 2005). A recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, he also received the IEEE Philadelphia Section Award "for exemplary service to the IEEE Philadelphia Section and contributions to engineering education in the Philadelphia area."

Dr. Bilgutay’s part in a national effort to restructure and reform engineering education has included holding a leadership role in the NSF sponsored Gateway Engineering Education Coalition. Currently, he is an alternate member of Gateway’s governing board and serves as the Gateway institutional activities leader at Drexel.
