College Holds 10th Annual Kamikaze Egg Drop Competition

College of Engineering Student Services had an eggs-cellent time celebrating National Engineers Week.

The 10th Annual Kamikaze Egg Drop Competition was held Friday, February 27th in the Great Court of Drexel University’s Main Building. The competition marked the end of a week of Drexel events held in honor of the 10th Annual National Engineers Week which was celebrated February 23rd-27th, 2004.

Teams of Drexel students and staff participated in the competition along with local area high school teams. The goal of the egg drop competition is to design and build a device which will interface with the design committee’s trolley car to safely carry a large, Grade A uncooked egg down a steel cable attached to the second floor of the Main building into a barricade on the ground floor. After hitting the barricade, the device is then opened to reveal whether or not the egg survived its journey. If the egg survives, the device passes to the second round, at which time it is released from the third floor of Main.

The 1st place Drexel team was comprised of Vince Yanni ’04 (MEM) and Fran Salvatore ’07 (software engineering) and their entry, “Red Rocket.” The first prize among high school participants went to Kwan Hui, Lorraine Lucino, Eleana Benedict and Amanda Barr from Williamstown High School in Gloucester County, NJ for their entry named “Howard.” The winning staff team was made up of Jim Zelenak and David Chezim from Enrollment Management.
