Message from the Dean

Greetings,

Those who are engaged in academic research and education have frequently come across Drexel's College of Engineering in the media throughout the last year. The third largest private engineering college in the nation, we are known as a leader in engineering education. Our college has reached unprecedented heights of recognition through our innovative research accomplishments and unparalleled initiatives such as SuperNOVA, which caters to the most technically talented young minds by offering integrated B.S./Ph.D. study in highly interdisciplinary fields.

Of this year's numerous faculty recognitions, we can site Dr. Yossef Elabd, Dr. Naga Kandasamy and Dr. Youngmoo Kim for receiving the prestigious CAREER Awards. Dr. Michel Barsoum made many international headlines with his research on the pyramids of Giza. Other accomplishments include the $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation for a project titled Keck Institute of Attofluidic Nanotube-Based Probes. This initiative has far reaching implications in cell biology, drug discovery and medicine.

These parallel other successes such as the opening of the Drexel Nanotechnology Institute’s Materials Characterization Facility. The MCF offers state-of-the-art characterization instruments that are used to teach undergraduate and graduate courses for the CoE and School of Biomedical Engineering, thus allowing students to directly benefit from the availability of top-notch research tools. Five internationally recognized labs were established in the computer science department, including but not limited to the Applied Symbolic Computation Lab, Software Engineering Research Group and the Vision and Cognition Lab.

We have also been active in establishing new international connections in our continuing effort to form a global network. The newest study abroad opportunities for students include Seoul National University in Korea, Bilkent and Koç in Turkey, and Shanghai Jiao Tong in China. These alliances strengthen our commitment to providing our students with a global education.

As in all worthy enterprises, our strength comes from our people. Our world-renowned faculty, high-achieving students, successful alumni and excellent staff all contribute to making Drexel University’s College of Engineering a fulcrum of success, happiness and great pride. Please share in our excitement as we venture into engineering new frontiers.
