Flexible Floor Plans – A Modular, Reconfigurable, & Sustainable Floor & Wall System

April 25, 2008

PIs Jin Wen (COE), James Mitchell (COE), Eugenia Ellis (COMAD), and COE student Jameson Detweiler received a Proof-of-Concept Grant award from the Green Building Alliance. The Drexel faculty will collaborate with Haworth, Inc. to design and experimentally test a modular wall and floor system to allow residential building occupants to easily reconfigure the floor plan, to provide better indoor air quality and to improve building energy efficiency. In this project, scientific approaches including theoretical simulation, prototype construction and testing, as well as life-cycle analysis, will be adopted to design and test such sustainable and innovative modular wall and floor system.
