Drexel Engineering Cities Initiative establishes a home at Drexel University for innovative, multidisciplinary research that focuses on the engineering of cities, policy development, and the creation of environmentally sustainable urban habitats. Bringing together the talent and research interests of faculty from each of the university’s colleges and schools, DECI promotes application-inspired research that connects meaningfully with urban stakeholders while informing public infrastructure and technology policy and design.

Researchers approach the engineered infrastructures of cities – including health, transportation, water and sewerage, ports, energy, communication, and food – as complex systems that are shaped not only by their designers but also by historical patterns in policymaking, citizen participation, and public understanding of science and technology.

DECI also examines the impact on these systems of the twenty-first century imperatives of environmental justice, environmentally sustainable engineering, and critical infrastructure protection. While DECI’s location in Philadelphia is a valuable research asset, faculty involved in the initiative have a broad range of research interests and experience that is truly global in scope and applicability.
