CAEE
Research Programs
Civil Engineering
Building and transportation infrastructure research efforts are conducted
through the Drexel Intelligent Infrastructure and Trasnportation Safety
Institute. The Institutes research has primarily been supported by DRPA,
NYCDOT, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, adn the Federal Highway
Administration, among others.
Architectural
Engineering
The AE program is actively involved with building infrastructure
safety, energy efficiency, and infoor environment protection research
projects. The AE faculty has successfully performed a series of energy-efficiency
projects funded by the Department of Energy and the American Society
of Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHREA). Drexel
University is also funded by the NSF to perform the design and validation
of novel indoor environment sensing system in conjunction with international
collaborators.
Civil Engineering
The
department has an active research program in environmental risk assessment.
The department also plays a major role in the Center for the Advancement
of Microbial Risk Assessment (CAMRA), a five year research consortium
involving seven universities.Reserach includes dose-response model development
for microbial risk assessments, assessment of public communication needs
for bioterrorism events, and decision analytic approaches to identifying
research priorities for risk management. There will also be involvement
in policy analysis research.
GAANN Programming
Graduate
Seminar Series
Monthly
seminar series will be held during the academic year to allow GAANN
Fellows to present their findings of their on-going reserach. Presentations
on career options for PhD candidates, presentation skills, and practice
interview skills will also be arranged.
Ethics
As
part of the seminar series, students will learn about issues such as
scientific misconduct and codes of ethics issued by professional societies
such as the ASCE and IEEE.
Proposal
Writing Workshops
Students will have the option of enrolling in proposal writing
workshops sponsored by the Office of Reserch and Graduate Studies that
will cover such topics as finding funding sources, writing critiques,
mastering the paper work, identifying and tying in strategic goals,
CAREER Awards and equipment grants. Students will also formulate a reserach
idea and present the proposal to faculty during a seminar.
Training
in Instruction
Students will participate in a teacher training workshop provided through
Drexel's School of Education. Fellows will have instruction on: innovative
pedagogy, self-assessment, student profiles, students' learning strategies,
and evaluating student learning outcomes.
All GAANN Fellows will take part in the teaching seminar series - the
Drexel Future Faculty Development Program. The program is structured
to utilize seminars, one-on-one mentoring, classroom observations, and
student led seminars to develop skills. These seminars cover such topics
as: course goal selection, constructing an effective syllabus, presentation
style, test design, case studies, use of techonology, writing across
the curriculum, ethical issues in teaching, and strategies for mentoring.
