Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need (GAANN) - Educating Renaissance Engineers

Water-Related Infrastructure
Building Infrastructure
Transportation Infrastructure

The Department of Civil, Architectural & Environmental (CAE) Engineering has 8 doctorial fellowship positions available through the “Educating Renaissance Engineers” GAANN Fellowship program. This program is motivated by the societal challenges associated with our ailing urban infrastructure and is aimed at fostering the development of a new category of CAE Engineers - renaissance CAE Engineers - capable of effectively educating future infrastructure managers. In addition to being well-versed in traditional paradigms, such renaissance CAE Engineers will be capable of exploiting ongoing technological advancements as well as communicating information to support decisions of the non-technical stewards of critical infrastructures.

In addition to performing cutting-edge research under the direction of Drexel University faculty, GAANN Fellows will participate in multi-disciplinary coursework in each of three areas:

(1) core disciplinary competencies (civil, architectural, or environmental engineering),

(2) cross-disciplinary technical training in established and emerging technology (courses in sensors, signal processing, database software, etc.), and

(3) management (decision analysis, public policy, risk management, etc.).

To further this new vision for CAEE, GAANN Fellows will be prepared for careers in academia through specific programs designed to develop both effective teaching skills and the ability to compete for research funds, which is becoming increasingly important for promotion and tenure.
