Dean’s Distinguished Lecture: CEO of Progress Energy Shares Vision for Future of Energy “This is a hot topic that can be redefined by future engineers and scientists. Students, you should work with professors for guidance in your research. You’re [students] the inventors and developers of our future. We can transform policy and make it a reality together” says Mr. Lyash. The lecture engaged students, faculty, staff, alumni and industry partners in the energy challenge. Mr. Lyash offered possible solutions to the energy crisis that included efforts to be focused on energy efficiency, alternative energy, institutions conducting the research in state-of-the-art research facilities and reformed policies. In addition, Mr. Lyash went into detail on President Barack Obama’s new energy plan for America and the short-term relief it would provide. He explained that long-term relief would not be in sight until 2050. “It’s an exciting time to be in the energy business. We can make the long-term vision happen,” says Mr. Lyash. The CoE Dean’s Distinguished Lecture hosts individuals who have made an impact in the fields of science and engineering. Previous speakers have included Richard Clark, Chairman, President and CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. and Leon Lederman, 1988 Nobel Laureate in Physics.
