Dr. Maguth Nezu is currently Professor of Psychology and Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University. She further serves as the Director of Masters Programs in Psychology in the Department of Psychology. In addition, Dr. Maguth Nezu holds a faculty appointment in psychiatry at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and is a clinical research consultant to the Queensland Cancer Council in Australia.
Dr. Maguth Nezu is currently the President-Elect of the American Board of Professional Psychology and also serves on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She is the recipient of numerous grant awards supporting her research and program development, particularly in the area of clinical interventions, including NCI, Philadelphia Office of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation, and NIJ. She was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award for Research from MCP Hahnemann University and has served as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Maguth Nezu has served as the North American Representative to the World Congress of Cognitive & Behavior Therapy, a member of the Organizing and Scientific Committees of the World Congress of Cognitive and Behavior Therapies, a member of the Organizing Committee for the National Association for Dual Diagnosis, and chaired site visits for APA accreditation of internship and residency programs. She serves on the editorial boards of leading psychology and health journals, including Cognitive & Behavioral Practice, Clinical Psychology: Research & Practice, Pragmatic Case Studies in Psychotherapy, and as past editorial board member for the Journal of Holistic Nursing. She currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for Oxford University Press regarding their Treatments That Work series.
Dr. Maguth Nezu has contributed to over 125 scholarly publications, including 15 books. Several titles include: Problem-Solving for Depression, Helping Cancer Patients Cope, Health Psychology, Awakening Self-esteem, The Emotional Wellness Way to Cardiac Health, Cognitive Behavioral Case Formulation and Treatment Design, and Evidence-based Outcome Research: A Practical Guide to Conducting Randomized Controlled Trials for Psychosocial Interventions. Her publications cover a wide range of topics in mental health and behavioral medicine, many of which have been translated into a variety of foreign languages. She is considered an international expert regarding cognitive behavioral assessment and treatment. She embraces a scientist-practitioner model of training in psychology and advocates the use of an individual approach to case formulation as a bridge between science and practice. Her expertise in clinical research is demonstrated by her previous administrative positions as Associate Provost for Research at MCP Hahnemann University, as well as her role as Scientific Integrity Officer for the university.
With regard to clinical practice, she has maintained a private practice for over twenty years and her work with the American Board of Professional Psychology has focused on the development of competency standards in professional practice and psychology specialization. She has collaborated with Dr. Arthur Nezu for the past two decades concerning the development and applications of Problem Solving Therapy (PST), a cognitive behavioral psychotherapy intervention that has strong empirical support for a wide range of populations including mood, behavior and personality disorders. In addition to her specialization in cognitive behavioral assessment and treatment of a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, and personality disorders in adults, behavioral family and parent training interventions, and psychological problems in adults with intellectual disabilities, she holds clinical certification in phallometric assessment. More recently, she has written a book and presented workshops on the integration of spiritual approaches to intervention and cognitive behavioral therapy. She has served as a distinguished visiting professor or consultant in psychology to the US Air Force, Brigham Young University, FBI, Department of Psychiatry, Nottingham, UK, Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of Kosice, Slovakia, and Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan.
