Disaster-STS Workshop

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

8:00 AM-4:00 PM

Scott Gabriel Knowles, PhD, associate professor, interim department head for history, Drexel University Department of History and Politics

Drexel University announces a pre-circulated paper workshop, bringing together invited participants from across humanities, social sciences and technical disciplines to work together towards elaborating an organizational and conceptual framework for "Disaster-STS" (science, technology and society).  The workshop convenes to think through the most effective ways that disaster researchers from multiple specialties might work together in the years to come.  An important focus of discussion will be an online disaster research platform designed to serve as a hub for collaboration, publication, and archival collection. Together, workshop participants will imagine possibilities and content for the digital platform, and how it can best be built out and sustained.

Key concepts for discussion will include (but are not limited to): disaster research methodologies, interdisciplinarity and "trading zones," ethics in disaster research, chronic/slow disaster, late industrialism, disaster expertise, risk society, risk and disaster policy, risk regulation, comparative disaster history, disaster ethnography, disaster sociology, disaster culture, climate change and intergenerational ethics, vulnerability, and environmental health.

The workshop will devote time to in-depth discussion of pre-circulated papers.  The event will conclude with discussion of overlapping themes and next steps; immediately afterwards many workshop participants will travel together to the University of Delaware for the Disaster Research Center 50thAnniversary Workshop (

This workshop is supported by the Drexel Center for Science, Technology and Society.
