Dean Murasko Receives Award for Support of Women in the Sciences

March 20, 2012 — Dr. Donna Murasko, dean and professor of biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel, was selected to receive the Elizabeth Bingham Mentoring Award from the Philadelphia chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS). The award honors Murasko‚Äôs extraordinary support of women in science, most notably for students and faculty members of the Department of Physics at Drexel. In her role as dean, Murasko has been instrumental in increasing the number of female faculty members in traditionally male-dominated departments such as physics, recognizing that having female faculty members as role models is a critical factor in providing a welcoming environment for female students. Moreover, she supported the establishment of the Women in Physics Society at Drexel, a student group aimed at attracting and supporting female students in the physics program.

Murasko became Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2003, and holds academic appointments at Drexel University and Drexel University College ofMedicine. She is the leader of a research laboratory to examine the effects of aging on the immune response and holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from HersheyMedical Center, Pennsylvania State University.

The Philadelphia chapter of AWIS was started in 1987 and is one of 47 chapters of the AWIS national organization. Its members work in industry, academia, government and nonprofit research centers and includes women at all stages of science careers including students and postdoctoral fellows. The chapter supports women scientists in the Philadelphia area through scholarships, mentoring, networking opportunities, and outreach activities.
