Dean's Seminar: The Influence of Community Corrections: Crime, Social Control & Victimization

In recent decades, community corrections, consisting largely of probation and parole, have become an increasingly common sentencing option. Efforts to decrease the prison population have served to accelerate this trend. As a result, agencies that supervise probationers and parolees are faced with difficult policy decisions, many of which can have significant impacts on public safety, rehabilitative efforts, and incarceration rates.

This talk will present the findings of a large-scale, randomized controlled trial conducted to identify the effects of community supervision on high-risk offenders. Jordan M. Hyatt, JD, PhD, will discuss the results of the experiment, as well as ongoing efforts to integrate treatment — including cognitive-behavioral therapy —into community supervision in Philadelphia.
