Careers in Mathematics
Math majors (and their parents) often wonder what types of careers are available to students with undergraduate math degrees. They look in the employment section of the New York Times or the Philadelphia Inquirer and find nothing under the heading of mathematician. Drexel University faculty are well aware that, although ads seldom appear in the newspaper under the heading "mathematician", our undergraduate students find excellent career opportunities in business, industry, government, and teaching. In response to this phenomenon, the various mathematics societies and organizations have begun to assemble material that demonstrates career opportunities for mathematics majors.
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) began to put together a data base of "Early Career Profiles" describing the careers of recent bachelor-level graduates with degrees in the mathematical sciences. These profiles are obviously weighted more heavily toward careers in finance and actuarial science (where most undergraduates currently head), but there are numerous other paths in market research, ecology, etc. Take a look at:
