The Louis Stein Minor in Judaic Studies, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, is designed to give students the opportunity to explore and understand the history, culture, politics, and religion of the Jewish people. Through interdisciplinary coursework and directed field study, students investigate the Jewish experience from both a contemporary and a historical perspective.
The Louis Stein Minor in Judaic Studies requires 24 credits: 9 from required courses, and 15 from electives. Currently, the required courses are as follows:
Jewish Literature and Civilization
ENGLISH 350
This course will introduce students to the first five books of the Torah, the Jewish Bible, and explore the influence of the Torah on the Jewish calendar and the daily lives of Jews, including personal and family life cycles. |
Jewish Life and Culture in the Middle Ages
HISTORY 298
An introductory survey of the history of the Jewish people, their civilization, religion, and contacts with other cultures in medieval times. Topics will include the rise of Christianity and Islam, the Talmud, Jewish mysticism, and the growth of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewry.

Modern Jewish History
HISTORY 249
An exploration of the social, cultural, political and religious forces that have shaped Jewry the world over from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Topics will include emancipation and enlightenment, modern religious movements, socialism, Hebrew and Yiddish literature, the Holocaust, Zionism and the state of Israel.

Students can apply a maximum of 6 credits toward the minor from field study; the amount of credit will be the responsibility of the academic adviser to the minor, who will evaluate the students field study project.
The Modern Language Program periodically offers courses in Hebrew Language.

The Josephine and Julius Cohen Award in Judaic Studies.
Each year students who study in the courses of the Judaic Studies Program are eligible for an award given for outstanding achievement in Judaic Studies. The award is publicly announced on Honors Day of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The award was established by a gift from Dr. D. Walter Cohen, Judaic Studies Advisory Board Member, Chancellor Emeritus of the MCP Hahnemann Unversity and Dean Emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. The award is named for Dr. Cohen's grandparents, immigrants to the United States who demonstrated great love and respect for learning.
