Personal Statement

The opportunity to substitute a course in Renaissance History for a required Aircraft Stress Analysis course created a major change in my life. I was hooked by the experience and was determined to pursue graduate studies in the history of science at Case Institute of Technology rather than graduate study in Mechanics. During the completion of my masters' and Ph.D. degrees, I was awarded a grant through the Fulbright Commission enabling me to spend a year in Bologna , Italy to gather data for my dissertation.

My goal has been to introduce engineering students to history and as a result of my personal experience, I have always felt that the history of science was the best way to accomplish this.

In my 35+ years at Drexel, I have served as Associate Dean of the College of Engineering for six years and Dean, of the College of Arts and Sciences for nearly two years. I also was the Executive Director of the World History Association for thirteen years (1988-2001). Currently, I am Director of the Appropriate Technology Program and the University Ombudsman.

Because of my connection of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, I have also enjoyed sharing my expertise with the public-at-large by presenting lectures throughout the state of Pennsylvania . For more than six years I have been speaking on such topics as Benjamin Franklin: Scientist/Humanist, Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics, Benjamin Rush: Physician, Patriot, Phlebotomist, and Appropriate Technology: The Engineer as Humanist.

I have been awarded the Lindback Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Harold J. Myers Award for Outstanding Service to the University. I also received a grant from the Pew Memorial Trust in cooperation with Operation Crossroads Africa to develop a coop program in Ghana for our Appropriate Technology Program. This year, I have been able to pursue my lifelong love of baseball history and teach a class on the topic.
