Drexel Publishing Group Writing Contest

Graduate Student Essay: Essays about any topic covered by the College of Arts and Sciences, including bioscience, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, culture, communication, psychology, history, politics, literature, philosophy, and related topics. This category is open only to current graduate students in all departments at Drexel University. Prizes:
Back to Top Approach: For all categories, think about the subject areas broadly and remember that the audience is generally well-educated but not necessarily expert in the subject area. The below examples are only intended to suggest possibilities, not to limit how you might approach writing your essay. In the Science and Math category, possible approaches include writing about the historical impact of a scientific discovery; the life or work of a particular scientist; the implications of a scientific or mathematical concept or controversy; what learning about science does for the learner; the challenges posed or opportunities presented by a developing technology or theory; and applying any of the above and more to everyday life and experience. In the Social Science and Humanities category, possible approaches include analyzing a literary work; arguing for a philosophical position; explaining a psychological theory; exploring a cultural, sociological, or political issue; examining the life or work of a writer or thinker; probing historical events and figures; and applying any of the above and more to everyday life and experience. The Graduate Student Essay category includes all of the above. Note for all categories: Examples of this kind of essay writing can be found in such books as the annual editions of The Best American Essays, The Best American Science and Nature Writing, The Best American History Essays, and The Best American Science Writing, and such magazines as American Scientist, Psychology Today, The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and numerous other publications. Back to Top How to Submit: Place cover sheet and essay in an envelope and place the envelope in the mailbox labeled "Publishing Group" in the mailroom of the Department of English and Philosophy, 5th floor of MacAlister Hall. See guidelines below. Indicate category on envelope. Back to Top Guidelines: 1. Any style or topic is permitted, within the subject area of each category. Entrants might choose to write analytical, expository, or persuasive essays; personal essays; or use the essay form in some other way. As long as the essay deals with a subject appropriate for the category, it will be considered. 2. For all categories, entry must be a complete essay, in manuscript form (a standard 12-point font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced, printed on one side per page). 3. Do not staple the entry (paper clips are acceptable). 4. Student name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript itself; place name on the cover sheet only. 5. Title and page number must appear in the header of every page. 6. Manuscript must not exceed 3,000 words. 7. There is no minimum word count. 8. Attach to the front of the manuscript a separate cover sheet with student name, e-mail address, phone number, student ID number, your major, essay title, category (Science and Math; Social Science and Humanities; or Graduate Student Essay), and word count. 9. Only one entry in each category per student. Back to Top General Rules: 1. Only current Drexel University students (in all majors) are eligible. 2. Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must not plagiarize or violate standards of academic integrity. 3. All guidelines must be followed. 4. Students may enter (and win in) more than one category. 5. Student name must not appear anywhere on the entry. 6. The Publishing Group reserves the right to re-categorize an entry and to disqualify an entry that does not follow the guidelines. 7. The decision of the judges is final. 8. Judges will be developing their own criteria for evaluating entries, but it is safe to assume that they will all be looking for excellence within the category. 9. Where necessary, cite sources using an appropriate, recognized style, such as MLA or APA. 10. There is no entry fee. Back to Top Note about Publication: All work submitted to the contest will be considered for publication in the new anthology being produced by the College of Arts and Sciences. Winning the contest does not guarantee inclusion in this anthology. By submitting writing to the contest, entrants grant permission for the work to be used in the anthology (whether in print or online). Essays may be edited for publication.
