A native of Sierra Leone, West Africa, Dr. Abioseh Porter is Professor of English and Head of the Department of English and Philosophy at Drexel. After earning a B.A. in English and French at Fourah Bay College, he received his Ph. D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta (www.ualberta.ca), Canada, and was a recipient of the "Society for the Humanities" postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University. Dr. Porter was a senior postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and also taught at the University of Alberta and Grambling State University before coming to Drexel. Whereas Abioseh Porter has published mainly on African authors in journals such as Jouvert: A Journal of Postcolonial Studies, International Fiction Review, Research in African Literatures, and World Literature Written in English and in a number of books, his teaching interests span quite a number of areas in both the western and nonwestern literary traditions. He is the author of many scholarly articles and two co-edited volumes. His most recent essay is "Economic Development and West African Fiction." He won Drexel's Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1991, has been nominated twice for the Carnegie "Professor of the Year" award, and was designated "most dedicated professor" for the year 2002 by the Drexel Undergraduate Student body. He also received the Drexel Minority Achievement Program Faculty Member of the Year Award for 2002-2003. Dr. Porter is editor of the African Literature Association (ALA) Bulletin (www.africanlit.org) - the leading news organ of the African literature. Association (ALA).
