SYLLABUS

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:    The course introduces the student to the sociology of work and occupations. The basic themes discussed in the course are definitions of work, brief history of work, industrial- revolution, and theoretical explanations of work organization. Students will learn that in a rapidly technologically changing society, the world of work can not be static: it undergoes dynamic and rapid change. Thus, we will also consider the transition from a manufacturing society to a service, information society, the effect of high-technology, and the globalization of the economy.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:   At the end of this course, students will have an understanding of:

1. What work is and is not

2. The social organization of work

3. Sociological explanations of work

4. The significance of ÒraceÓ, gender, and class

5. Changes in organizational structure

6.  The significance of new technology

 

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: 1. The Social Organization of Work, by R. Hodson & T. Sullivan,

3rd ed.  2. The Disposable American, by Louis Uchitelle [LU] in the readings

 

EXAMINATION/GRADES:  The evaluation of your accomplishment in this course will be based on THREE  in-class quizzes, and a final exam. The quizzes will be worth 60 percent [3x20], and the take home final exam 40 percent of the final course grade.

 

QUIZ DATES: T 7/3; T 7/10; T 7/17; TAKE HOME FINAL.  Please note that make-up quizzes will be given only in case of  documented justifiable reason.

 

LECTURES: Class sessions will be devoted to a combination of lectures and discussions. StudentÕs questions, comments and observations are welcomed and expected.
