SYLLABUS
THE COURSE: This course introduces the students to the sociological study of the family, with an emphasis on the functions and structures of the family, and how and such functions and structures have changed historically. We will cover topics such as theoretical explanations of the family, family structures, family relationships, divorce, power, and the future of marriage and of the family.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:
1.Feuds About the Family, by N. Benokraitis, ed. [NB] in the
readings], 2. In the Name of the Family, by
Judith Stacey, [JS].
EXAMINATIONS/GRADES: The
evaluation of your accomplishment in this course will be based on 1) Four
weekly quizzes and 2) A take-home final exam. The quizzes will be worth 15
points each, for a total of [15x4] 60 points. The take home final will be worth 40 points.
NOTE: 1) I do not curve nor inflate grades. 2) Make up exams will be give only in case of documented justifiable reason.

LECTURES: Class sessions will be devoted to a combination of lectures and discussions. Your questions, comments and observations are welcomed and expected.
NOTE: This course is a FIVE WEEK COURSE! We will, therefore, cover a lot of material about
the Family in a very short period of time. In view of this, students should not
make the mistake of getting behind the assigned readings!
