Class Objective:  This course is intended to provide students with an understanding of public speaking. Specifically, students will learn how to prepare and deliver speeches meant to persuade, inform, and entertain audiences. For most of the classes students will give presentations that members of the audience will be asked to discuss and evaluate.

There are a number of assigned readings. These readings are necessary to create the foundation of our class. As a result, it is extremely important that you keep up with reading assignments. They are necessary for participation and your ability to complete the speaking assignments.

Required Text:

Sprague, J. & D. Stuart. 2008. The SpeakerÕs Handbook 8th edition. Belmont, CA: Thomson Wadsworth

Assignments:

Speeches:

Students will do a total of nine speeches for class. The first speech is a practice run or Òrough draftÓ. At the end of this class the audience will provide feedback and students will be allowed to view a tape of their speech. The second speech will be graded and an outline must be submitted with this speech. Because of the 10 week course schedule make ups will only be permitted under extreme circumstances. If the student is not present on the day that they are scheduled to speak they will receive a zero for the speech.

Please Note: Students are required to submit a detailed outline with each ÒfinalÓ speech at the time that they speak for to receive credit.

  1. Speech of Introduction [2 minutes]. In this speech students must introduce themselves to the class. They can talk about themselves in general or choose a specific experience that they have had to focus upon. 10 points

  1. Informative speech [10 minutes]. In this speech students are informing the audience on topic that they have researched. 15 points

  1. Persuasive speech [10 minutes]. In this speech students are attempting to persuade their audience to agree with, or at lease see the value of, their point of view on a social issue. Students should note that they must provide background information on the topic as well as create an argument. 20 points

  1. Special Occasion or Personal Choice speech [5 minutes]. In this speech students should entertain their audience. The speaker can choose to discuss a special occasion or address something of substance such as a political, business, or social subject. 25 points

  1. Impromptu [5 minutes]. In this speech students can discuss any topic. The point of this speech is to incorporate the skills learned throughout the course into one closing speech for the class. Students will not do a rough draft of this speech and no outline is required. 10 points

Quiz: There will be one quiz at the beginning of the term to ensure that students understand the foundations of public speaking. The quiz is worth 5 % of the overall grade.

Attendance/Participation: Attendance is required. Missing more than two classes will have a negative impact upon your overall grade. Participation requires that students complete assigned readings, are ready speak on assigned days or ready to contribute to our discussions. Attendance and participation are 15% of the course grade.

Plagiarism: Please refer to Drexel UniversityÕs academic honesty policy.  Students will be failed for the entire course and reported to the University for any form of plagiarism.

Grading system:

All papers as well as the final grade will be based upon the following scale:
