William S. Pocket Guide to Public Speaking.
Prentice Hall, 2002. (copy on reserve in Hagerty Library)
OVERVIEW
The purpose of
this course is to give students practice expressing themselves in a number of
audience situations and becoming more assured public speakers. For most class periods, students will
give presentations which members of the audience will be asked to evaluate.
GROUND RULES
1. Class attendance is mandatory, and audience
participation is important.
Students who contribute creatively to peer evaluations and discussions
and take an active role in class will be given the advantage in grading.
2. Students will be expected to give a minimum
of four graded presentations through the term. In addition, there may be some nongraded impromptus.
3. Students will be expected to be prepared;
except in extreme situations, no make-ups will be allowed.
4. The instructor reserves the right to modify
the assignments or course requirements as the term progresses.
5. Students are expected to abide by the
plagiarism guidelines as defined in the Holt Handbook.
The penalty for plagiarism is failure in the course.
