THE COURSE: Sociology is more than ³common sense² and more than the study of social (group) behavior. The true object of sociological inquiry is Human Social Practices. Hence, the goal of this introductory-survey course is to provide the student with a ³sociological imagination², i. e., to make the student aware of the nature of the social world that surrounds her/him and of which she/he is a part.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: In Conflict and Order, 11th ed., by D.S. Eitzen and M. B. Zinn
EXAMINATIONS/GRADES: The evaluation of your accomplishment in this course will be based on FIVE in-class EXAMS. Each exam will be worth twenty [20] percent of the final course grade.
TENTATIVE EXAM DATES: Exam 1: M 10/16; Exam 2: M 10/30; Exam 3: M 11/13
Exam 4: M 11/27 and Exam 5: During the week of Final Exams
NOTE: 1) I do not curve grades. 2) Make up quizzes will be given only in case of documented justifiable reason.
LECTURES: Class sessions will be devoted to a combination of lectures and discussions. Students¹ questions, comments and observations are welcomed and expected.
