Course Descriptions
Master of Science Program
Drexel's Master of Science in Communication prepares students for careers in a wide range of professional activities. We specialize in three areas: public communication, technical communication, and science communication.
Coursework
To complete the program, students take 45 quarter credits of required and elective courses.
Internship
All students are required to obtain work experience by completing a six month full-time paid internship. The Department will help students in finding an appropriate internship.
Portfolio
As a final graduation requirement, students submit a professional exit portfolio. This portfolio, based on course work and professional assignments, undergoes a rigorous process of review by faculty and an external professional.
Assistantships
The program awards a limited number of teaching/research assistantships each year. These are awarded competitively. The assistantships include a monthly stipend and tuition remission. Awardees work as teaching assistants for the undergraduate Technical Writing course and/or as research assistants for faculty projects. For more information, contact the Department.
Program Completion
The program can be completed through full-time or part-time study; courses meet once per week in the evening. Full-time students take three courses each quarter and usually complete the degree in two years, including the six month internship required of students with no experience in the field. Part-time students usually take one or two courses each quarter. Depending on the number of courses taken each term, part-time students finish the program in three to four years.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to graduate studies. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 must provide scores from the Graduate Record Examination. Students who wish to be considered for teaching and research assistantships should also take the GRE. Prospective students must also submit with their applications a 1,500-word statement explaining why they want to enter the program. The program's screening committee carefully reads the essays to evaluate each applicant’s writing skills and sense of purpose.
The program accommodates students from both science and humanities backgrounds. Some students pursue their degrees while already working in technical or scientific fields; others are new to the field. For students without work experience, the program features a paid 6-month internship.
