Internship in Criminal Justice
The internship in Criminal Justice is designed to blend classroom learning with professional experience to give students a better understanding the criminal justice system and crime. The relationships students develop while interning are invaluable for future career development and often lead to employment positions in criminal justice after graduation. Additionally, students often receive letters of recommendation for graduate and law school as a result of the relationships developed through the internship experience.
Internship positions are available in the following areas:
- Federal, State, and Municipal Law Enforcement
- Institutional Corrections
- Forensic Science
- Courts
- Community Corrections, Probation, and Parole
- Juvenile Justice
- Criminal Law
- Loss Prevention and Corporate Security
- Restorative Justice
- Victim Advocacy
- Intelligence and Crime Data Analysis
Criminal Justice majors can complete up to two internships, for a total of six academic credits. The internships will generally be completed during the summer months following the sophomore and junior years. All internships involve a minimum of twenty hours of work per week for a period of no fewer than ten weeks. To be eligible for an internship, students must have completed their sophomore year and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Students must also successfully complete at least one course related to the work performed by the internship employer. Prior to applying for a internship position, students must meet with a Criminal Justice faculty member to identify the agency that best meets their academic and career interests.
