GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Department of Culture and Communication offers several master’s programs and a PhD program.  We offer master’s degrees in Communication, Environmental Policy, and Publication Management.  The communication degree includes three areas of specialization: public communication, technical communication, and science communication.  The PhD in communication takes advantage of our department’s interdisciplinary make up toward the study of mass communication and new media in various contexts.

Communication
David Riesman (1959), one of the most important social scientist in history, once wrote: “working in the field of communication is inviting… because of its very ambiguity and lack of structure.“ We still hold true to Riesman’s spirit of not creating boundaries when it comes to studying communication. The study of communication is done by many disciplines from their own point of view. The reason for this is that communication is at the core of what it is to be a human being. It is what, together with culture, binds us together across time and space. Our PhD emphasizes that inseparable relationship between culture and communication. We encourage the study of how one shapes or influences the other. We are particularly interested the mediated communication and its relationship to virtual, local, political, and international cultures.

Communication has since become its own discipline, but we still hold true to Riesman’s spirit of not creating boundaries when it comes to studying communication.  The study of communication is done by many disciplines from their point of view.  The reason for this that communication is at the core of what it is to be a human being.  It is what, together with culture, binds us together across time and space.
