Laboratory Broken Glass/Waste Disposal

The university is committed to recycling waste glass whenever possible. However, glass waste from our research and teaching laboratories must be handled appropriately; in many cases it is made of borosilicate glass (e.g. trade names Pyrex or Kimax) which cannot be recycled, in other cases the waste glass may be chemically contaminated and require proper treatment. This is explained fully in the web version of the Drexel University Glass Waste Policy. A PDF version of the Drexel University Glass Waste Policy can be downloaded here.

Hazardous/Chemical Waste Disposal

The procedures for the disposal of hazardous materials or other chemical wastes are described fully in the departmental Chemical Hygiene Plan. All materials should be fully labeled, including use of an orange hazardous material tag (an example of which can be downloaded here), which are available in the third floor chemistry stockroom or directly from the University Health & Safety Department. A researcher should fill in a Chemical Waste Pick-Up Request form and fax it directly to the University Safety & Health department. The materials will be scheduled for pick-up directly from your laboratory on a mutually convenient date and time.

Additionally, the chemical waste pickup form can be filled out on-line here.

Incident Procedures

While all efforts are made to maintain a safe research and teaching environment, incidents such as a chemical spill, small fire, minor injury, etc. do occur. The department safety committee has put together an "Incident Procedure Checklist" to outline what procedures to follow depending on the severity of the incident and whether it occurs in a teaching or research laboratory. Don't look for this information when you are facing a problem- plan ahead for safety. A PDF version of the checklists can be downloaded here.

Incident Reports

All incidents (chemical spill, small fire, injury, etc.) occurring in a Chemistry Department teaching or research laboratory must be reported to the departmental safety committee. These reports are written and are currently being collected over the web. You should use either the Teaching Laboratory Incident Report form or Research Laboratory Incident Report form as appropriate.

Annual Safety Training Now On-Line

All department employees (faculty & staff), post-doctoral associates, visiting scientists, full or part-time graduate students and undergraduates doing teaching or research in a Drexel University laboratory, or those overseeing teaching or research in a Drexel University laboratory, must complete the on-line safety training modules. Go to the University Department of Safety & Health on-line training site at:

http://www.drexelresearchtraining.com/

If you have not registered on the Safety Training site before, click on the green button marked New Here- Sign Up. Fill in the on-line form with the required information. If you are already registered, enter your e-mail address and password, then click Go to enter the training site.
