Owens Research GroupLaboratory FacilitiesThe 1300 square foot research laboratory is well-equipped for MALDI work. Mass spectrometry equipment includes two custom-built linear and one reflectron-type TOFMS instruments. Delayed extraction is available on each of these instruments. The linear instrument can be equipped with a pulsed electron impact/pulsed extraction source for experiments requiring general ionization capability. Additionally, our group shares a Bruker Biflex III MALDI TOFMS system with Dr. Murray Johnston (Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Delaware) and Dr. Akos Vertes (Dept. of Chemistry, George Washington University). The instrument is located in Dr. Johnston's lab at the University of Delaware, a short 40 miles away in Newark, DE. Laser equipment includes the usual Laser Science, Inc. 337ND near-diffraction limited nitrogen laser, a Lambda Physik LPX105i excimer laser coupled with a Lambda Physik LPD3002 dye laser (with second harmonic generation crystals to cover the wavelength range of 220-900nm), a Questek model 2340 excimer laser, and a Molectron UV-12 nitrogen laser. Routine laser diagnostic equipment, including fast photodiodes, power meters and beam profilers, are also available. Departmental FacilitiesDepartmental equipment available includes a VG Analytical VG-70 double-focusing magnetic sector mass spectrometer system with electron impact, chemical ionization and fast atom bombardment capability, a Finnigan TSQ-46 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with solids probe electron impact and desorption chemical ionization capability, a Finnigan 4600 quadrupole gas chromatography/ mass spectrometer (GC/MS) system, a Bruker WD250 250 MHz NMR spectrometer with 13C and 1H capability. Routine chemical analysis instrumentation, including an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace accessory, Fourier-transform infrared absorption with diffuse reflectance capability, UV/visible absorption spectrophotometers, fluorescence spectrophotometers, both packed and capillary gas chromatographs, a high performance liquid chromatograph, and electrochemical instrumentation (including coulometric, voltametric and polarographic analyzers), is available in the Departmental Undergraduate Instrumentation Laboratory.
