| AFAS 395-501: Exploring Hip Hop Culture |
This course is designed to build upon the foundations of an earlier course offered called, “The Politics of Hip Hop.” Whereas the previous course examined the origins of rap music as well as rap’s race and gender politics, this class is aimed at concentrating more on the material and social culture that has developed around rap music. Ideally it should explore consumerism, music video culture, and mainstream representations of hip hop youth especially with respect to gender, sexuality, crime and violence. This is the first time that it will be offered so anyone interested in teaching it will have the opportunity to create and implement their vision of the above stated aims.
Candidates should have some teaching experience and a background in either Africana Studies, African American Studies or related fields. Compensation is $2500.00 per course. Interested parties should send a cover letter, CV and relevant/sample syllabi to:
