Physical
Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences: Programs of Study
The
Programs in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences at Drexel
University proudly offer both professional education for career
preparation as a physical therapist as well as post-professional
education opportunities for individuals interested in leadership
positions in clinical practice, education or research.
The Professional Doctor of Physical
Therapy Program (DPT) prepares individuals for a career
as a physical therapist. The curriculum at Drexel is designed to
educate students to have the knowledge, concepts and skills for
successful clinical practice in the physical therapy field.
The Post-Professional Doctorate
in Physical Therapy (DPT) prepares clinicians to practice
as autonomous healthcare providers and to meet societal expectations
in our changing healthcare environment. The program is primarily
offered online to accommodate the needs of practicing clinicians.
The curriculum includes current approaches in examination, diagnosis,
and prognosis; a focus on clinical competence consistent with evidence-based
practice; and an increased role in prevention, wellness, and health
promotion. Drexel’s transitional program promotes expertise
in clinical decision making in one of the following concentration
areas: Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Adult Rehabilitation, and Hand and
Upper Quarter Rehabilitation.
The PhD program prepares
researchers and educators in rehabilitation sciences with an interest
in pediatrics, orthopedics or movement sciences. By integrating
clinical and basic sciences, our faculty members educate research
scientists with a background that is both broad in scope and rigorous
in depth. Our graduates are prepared to expand the body of knowledge
in rehabilitation through understanding the mechanisms of movement
impairments, preventing and reducing movement dysfunctions and disability,
and promoting health and physical performance for children and adults.
The Certificate of Advanced
Practice in Hand and Upper Quarter Rehabilitation is
designed for practicing physical and occupational therapists to
gain knowledge and skills in the specialized field of hand therapy
through a supported distance learning environment. The curriculum
provides advanced practice education in the examination, evaluation,
and management of clients with hand and upper extremity dysfunction.
Graduates will be better prepared to take the examination to qualify
as Certified Hand Therapists (CHT) offered by the Hand Therapy Certification
Commission and to deliver hand therapy services within their healthcare
community.
The Certificate of Advanced Practice in Physical Therapy
affords practitioners the opportunity to enhance their clinical
and/or managerial skills to meet current and future healthcare needs.
This flexible, distance learning option requires no formal academic
degree. Therapists may select this program in order to: 1) satisfy
requirements for promotion or licensure; 2) structure a program
of study for specialist certification or recertification; 3) gain
knowledge and skills needed to expand practice into new market areas
(i.e., women’s health); or 4) update clinical competencies
in preparation for re-entering the workforce.
The
Master’s in Health Sciences (MHS) is a professional
degree in rehabilitation sciences that enables physical therapists,
occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation specialists to
meet changing healthcare needs through a supported distance learning
environment. The program consists of three concentration areas:
hand and upper quarter rehabilitation, orthopedics, and pediatrics.
The focus is on using best evidence for practice, demonstrating
leadership in implementation and evaluation of clinical services,
and practicing life-long learning.
