Programs in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science At Drexel University November 2007 Newsletter
Drexel graduates achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the licensure exam this year! The DPT Class of 2007 is the third class in a row to accomplish this feat! In its 27 years, Drexel graduates have achieved an overall 98% first time pass rate on the examination compared to the national average of 90%.
Drexel graduate, Navy LT Angelique Ruiz, was featured on the cover and in the October PT Magazine story, “Physical Therapists Serving Our Nation.” LT Ruiz is assistant head of PT at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda.
Dr. Robert Palisano was awarded Drexel’s inaugural Research and Scholarship Award for his work on the Gross Motor Functional Classification System (GMFCS) that revolutionized the way practitioners think about the abilities of children with disabilities. The GMFCS is the international standard used by physicians, therapists and others in classifying and studying children with cerebral palsy.
DPT students, Jessica Ruggiero and Elizabeth Larimer, and advisor, Dr. Maggie O’Neil presented a poster, “Trends in Physical Activities in School-Aged Children who are Overweight” at the PPTA annual meeting.
Dr. O’Neil, Patty Rubertone and Dr. Augusta Villanueva published a paper, “Community Experiential Learning Opportunities in the Drexel University Professional DPT Program in the Journal of Physical Therapy Education this fall.
Drs. Lisa Chiarello and Robert Palisano conducted an American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) Grand Rounds Lecture Web cast entitled, “Enabling Participation of Children with Cerebral Palsy.”
Dr. Palisano and colleagues from Canada and the UK presented a symposium, “Quality of Life in Children and Youth with Cerebral Palsy: Perspectives from European and North American Research” at the AACPDM meeting in Vancouver.
Dr. David Ebaugh and collaborators from the UPenn Shoulder and Elbow services were awarded the Best Basic Science Paper Award at the 10th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons meeting in September in Brazil for their paper, “Defining the Functional Range of Motion of the Shoulder.”
Dr. Margo Orlin was the invited speaker for the Pediatric Clinical Session at the APTA National Student Conclave in Valley Forge. Her talk was “Understanding Participation for Children with Disabilities.”
