Master’s in Health Sciences (MHS) in Rehabilitation Sciences Program: About

Mission
The mission of the MHS degree in Rehabilitation Sciences is to enable physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation specialists to meet changing healthcare needs through a supported distance learning environment that recognizes the diversity of professional experiences. We strive to promote academic excellence, evidence-based practice, expertise, and life long learning.

Program Description
The MHS is a professional degree in rehabilitation sciences open to therapists and other rehabilitation specialists seeking leadership roles in clinical practice as well as in the broader health care community. This degree is primarily designed for U.S. licensed therapists and rehabilitation professionals who are preparing to enter the PhD program or other post-professional doctoral programs. Licensed therapists or rehabilitation professionals from Canada may also be considered. Foreign-trained therapists seeking licensure to practice physical therapy in the United States should apply to the professional DPT program.

The MHS in Rehabilitation Sciences program consists of three concentrations including pediatrics, orthopedics, and hand and upper quarter rehabilitation. Each concentration consists of 8 core courses (24 quarter credits), 4 or 5 concentration courses (16-18 quarter credits), and 1-2 elective courses (3-5 quarter credits) for a total of 45 quarter credits. The program is offered primarily online, supplemented by onsite weekends for hands-on laboratory sessions for concentration courses. The program can reasonably be completed part-time in 3-1/2 years taking one course per quarter.

Supported Distance Learning

Classes are provided primarily through distance learning venues, supported by regular online faculty contact. Learning materials are available via computer and through interactive online discussion or chat tools. Support for distance learning students is vital to ensure that students learn effectively. Faculty support is available through email, telephone, fax, discussion boards, and face-to-face meetings.

On-Site Orientation Weekends

The concentration courses in pediatrics, orthopedics, and hand and upper quarter rehabilitation may include onsite weekend sessions for lecture, laboratory activities, and group discussion. Course directors will determine the need and dates for onsite weekends.
