Nursing: MSN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides advanced psychiatric-mental health care.  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program (PMHNP) prepares practitioners to provide a wide range of services to adults and their families. The program of study is based on a biopsychosocial model of care. It includes the study and application of diagnostic and treatment modalities, and theories and approaches to practice. Students also learn collaborative skills to work with other health care professionals to provide metal health care services.
Graduates practice in a wide variety of settings as this program enables them to provide direct (assessment, intervention) and indirect (consultation, case management, and supervision) advanced practice services to individuals who are at risk and those who need mental health services. They are eligible to sit for ANCC's Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Certification Examination.
Key Program Features:

  • Clinically current faculty.
  • Two on campus Residency Visits with simulated clinical learning experiences conducted in our new state of the art Multidisciplinary Patient Simulation Lab.
  • The Advanced Physical Assessment course is offered as an on-line course with an on-campus component.  Students are required to come to campus twice during the course: once for a midterm assessment and evaluation, and again at the end of the course for a final re-demonstration of clinical assessment skills. The end of the course visit is scheduled during the required NP Summer Residency Visit.

This is a 55 credit graduate degree program. It is designed for part-time attendance by working nurses. A total of 640 clinical hours are completed in the last year of the program.  The four clinical practicum courses require two 8 hour clinical days per week.
