MSN in Clinical Nurse Leader Programs
This program leads to a Master of Science in Nursing degree with special preparation as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) in one of three nursing specialty areas: Adult Health, Pediatric Health or Women’s Health. The program is based on models of interdisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based practice. The program will provide the graduate with advanced skills in direct patient care and decision-making, health education, leadership, information management, inter/interdisciplinary communication, accountability for patient safety and improvement in clinical outcomes.
The CNL program can be completed on a part-time basis over a two year period. Classes are offered in the evening for the convenience of the working professional nurse. Each CNL student completes 400 clinical contact hours as part of the formal education program under the direct guidance of a clinical preceptor and faculty member.
After successful completion of the CNL program, the graduate is eligible to take the CNL certification examination developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

- What is a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL)?
The Drexel Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a nursing professional educated at the master’s level to perform in an advanced nursing role. The CNL is prepared to oversee the care of a specific group of patients and actively provide direct patient care in complex situations. It is the responsibility of the CNL to evaluate patient outcomes and adjust patient plans of care based on best practice as evidenced by research. It is the role of the CNL to assess patient safety risk, coordinate, delegate and supervise care provided by an interdisciplinary health care team. In the CNL’s position information technology is used in providing patient care and maintaining outcome databases. Finally, the CNL serves as a role model and resource to other nurses and health care providers.
- Why was the Clinical Nurse Program (CNL) developed at Drexel?
The program was developed at Drexel in response to a national call for nurses that would be educated to meet the challenges of today’s dynamic health care system. The aim of Drexel’s program is to produce graduates who are capable of implementing outcomes-based practice and produce quality improvement initiatives that will be responsive to society’s health care needs. At this time the role of the CNL is supported by the American Colleges of Nursing, the American Organization of Nurse Executives and the American Nurses Association.

Currently there are 90 known educational programs throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

The CNL program at Drexel prepares graduates to enter an advanced clinical leadership position in one of three nursing specialties offered: Adult Health, Pediatrics or Women’s Health.
V. How long will it take to complete the Drexel Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program?
The Drexel CNL program may be completed in a minimum of two years for the part-time student and in less time for full-time students. Application deadlines occur in the Fall, Spring, and Summer (please see specific graduate nursing admission information on-line).
- Can I complete the Drexel Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program online?
While the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions has many completely online programs, the CNL program is not offered in totality online. All CNL classes are conveniently located on the Center City Hahnemann campus in Philadelphia which is easily accessible by train or Amtrak at 30th Street Station. Some CNL classes provide the student with the choice of selecting an online or in-class format.
