Drs. Stephanie Brooks and Roberta Waite Co-Author ADHD Book Chapters

November 13, 2013 —

Drexel CNHP faculty Drs. Stephanie Brooks and Roberta Waite co-authored two chapters for the new book, The Distracted Couple: The Impact of ADHD on Adult Relationships (Crown House Publishing 2013). Their chapters are “Breaking the Silence: ADHD and African American Couples” and “African American Couples and ADHD: A Multilevel Approach.” ADHD has been relatively understudied in relationships and marriages, and even more so in underrepresented cultures. Drs. Brooks and Waite focus on diverse and less-recognized populations, especially African American couples facing ADHD. “Breaking the Silence: ADHD and African American Couples” was written “because there is a void in published research and extant literature about addressing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among African American couples,” explained Dr. Waite. “The goal of this chapter was to locate ADHD within a socio-cultural context, deconstruct the dominant discourse as it is related to African American couples, and offer a social justice perspective as a conceptual lens of understanding the problem.”
