Legal Issues Confronting Nursing Faculty & Administrators (Drs. Smith Glasgow & Dreher)
Course Description: This course will use a case-based approach to examine the multitude of legal issues that confronts the contemporary nursing faculty member in the classroom, in clinical, and in their professional role as a faculty member. The course will also address issues confronted by academic nursing administrators – program directors, department chairs, associate deans and deans. The course will begin with an introduction to the legal process and how legal cases are retrieved and cited in the literature. The course will examine such concepts as ‘due process’ and how it is operationalized in higher education. The role of a university-based attorney as a consultant in clinical education programs will also be addressed. Using a case-based method, various scenarios will be analyzed within a legal and ethical framework. Taught in the DrNP-in-London program, students will use greater London nursing education sites for field trips and utilize local speakers from the Royal Academy of Nursing and other university settings.
Faculty: Dr. Mary Ellen Smith Glasgow & Dr. H. Michael Dreher
