Dance/Movement Therapy: Admission Requirements

Applicants to the graduate dance/movement therapy education section of the Hahnemann Creative Arts in Therapy Program are required to fulfill the following standards for admission:

  • Degree: Baccalaureate degree and a sound background in dance/movement. Although no particular undergraduate major is required, it is advised that applicants have taken courses in related areas such as psychology, sociology, human development, or anthropology. Dance/movement experience may be part of the undergraduate degree or may be acquired in studio work.
  • GPA: 3.0 or above
  • Personal Resume
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three letters of recommendation are required, preferably from some who can speak about your work academically or your work in human service, community or mental health.
  • Personal Statement: This 1-3 page typed essay is considered an autobiography and is intended to serve as a sample of your writing as well as letting us get to know more about you.
  • Standardized Graduate Admission Tests: Scores on the Miller Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) that meet the standards for admission. (See the FAQ “Frequently asked Questions” page to learn what our score requirements are.).
  • Audition: The program invites candidates who possess personal maturity, an ability to use movement as a means of communication, and a sincere desire to develop a career in human services.  The audition will consist of a group improvisational experience. Our program is looking for how you use dance as a communicative, expressive and interpersonal tool rather than just technique or physical ability.  Applicants do not need to prepare any movement. Candidates living overseas may submit a videotape in lieu of the movement audition. International candidates should request instructions about all of these requirements with their admission materials and are advised to begin the admission process early.
  • Interview: An in depth in person interview will be conducted by the faculty of the graduate dance/movement therapy program. The interview consists of a review of personal academic interpersonal and creative aptitudes of the applicant. For international applicants a phone interview may be substituted for the in person interview.
Additional requirements for International Applicants:
