Art Therapy: Faculty

Nancy Gerber, Ph.D, ATR-BC, LPC, Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Art Therapy Education (Hahnemann Medical College  and Hospital; Union Institute and University).  Dr. Gerber has more than 20 years of psychiatric clinical art therapy experience with adults and adolescents.   She has been Director of the Art Therapy Education program since 1996. Dr. Gerber’s interests and expertise are in the areas of art therapy assessment and treatment, art therapy education, research, and clinical supervision. Her research interests are in the area of doctoral education for art therapists.   Dr. Gerber serves as the Vice Chair of the Social and Behavioral Science Institutional Review Board at Drexel University.  Dr. Gerber serves as the Chair of the Continuing Education Committee for the American Art Therapy Association.  Her doctoral research entitled The Essential Components of Doctoral Level Education for Art Therapists was recently published in the Arts in Psychotherapy Journal.

Betty Hartzell, Ph.D, ATR-BC, LPC, Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Director of Graduate Art Therapy Education (Loyola Marymount University formerly Immaculate Heart College and Pacifica Graduate Institute). Her dissertation was entitled Creativity through the Prism of Jungian Psychological Type. She is the Assistant Director of Graduate Art Therapy Education. Dr. Hartzell has 30 years of clinical experience with children and adults in private practice, and in agencies and hospitals across the Delaware Valley and in California in positions of therapist, supervisor and administrator. Her interests include; treatment, Jungian Psychotherapy and Multicultural issues in therapy.

Marcia Sue Cohen-Liebman, M.C.A.T, ATR-BC, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor (Hahnemann University), M.A. (Rutgers University). Ms. Cohen-Liebman is a forensic art therapy specialist. Forensic Art Therapy utilizes creative expression in the resolution of legal matters that are in dispute.  Ms. Cohen-Liebman created and teaches the elective course Forensic Art Therapy which explores art therapy practice and theory within a legal context.  Ms. Cohen-Liebman has consulted nationally with law enforcement professionals, lawyers, and psychologists specializing in the evaluation of domestic litigation cases using comprehensive procedures for art therapy assessment.  She has also published extensively on the topic of forensic art therapy.

Michael Fogel, M.A., ATR-BC, LPC (MCP Hahnemann University), master’s degree research: “On the Use of Patients’ Humorous Art Productions in Art Psychotherapy.” Clinical experience with the elderly, chronically ill, children, and adolescents. Co-coordinator of the Family Court Visitation Initiative in Philadelphia. Currently in private practice, Mr. Fogel has adapted art therapy into a model of social skills training for children suffering from behavioral problems.  Teaches first-year Art Therapy Group Supervision, individual  art therapy supervision and participates in thesis advisement.

Ronald Hays, M.S., ATR-BC, LPC, Clinical Associate Professor(Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital),  Mr. Hays has had an interest in developing art therapy assessments including: the Dot to Dot, the Bridge drawing, and the 6-part art therapy evaluation.  He also has maintains an interest in specialty areas of arts medicine, art therapy and business, and supervision in the creative arts.  Mr. Hays is the Chair of the Nominations Committee for the American Art Therapy Association.  He has been active in  both program administration for the Hahnemann Creative Arts in Therapy Program and  service for the American Art Therapy Association over his long career. Mr. Hays has served an active role in the procurement of licensure for creative arts therapists in Pennsylvania and has recently completed a term as the president of the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapies and Professional Counselors.

Kerith L. Kraft, Ed.S, ATR-BC
(Rider University) (MCP Hahnemann University), Master’s degree research: “Comparing Artwork of Chronically Ill Children with the Artwork of Children with Chronically Ill Family Members: A Review of the Literature.” Dr. Kraft Has presented extensively on pediatric medical art therapy and has presented at the National Kidney Foundation, the Delaware Valley Transplant Program, and America’s Health Network..  Dr.Kraft is received doctorate in school psychology. She has created and teaches an elective course entitled Art Therapy in an Educational Setting.

Susan Kaye-Huntington, Psy.D, ATR-BC, LPC, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor (Immaculata College), M.C.A.T.(Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital), Licensed Psychologist.  Dr. Kaye-Huntington has worked as an art therapist clinician and supervisor for over 20 years with a variety of clinical populations. She has studied psychoanalytic theory with Anna Freud at the Anna Freud Center in England.   Currently Dr. Kaye-Huntington has a private practice in which she specializes in treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, and health related psychological issues with children and adults.  She has clinical expertise and particular interest in the utilization of art therapy in conjunction with hypnosis. Dr. Kaye-Huntington  has also served as a consultant to the School District of Philadelphia.  She currently teaches first year Art Therapy Group Supervision and first year Art Therapy Assessment and Treatment for Children. Doctoral Dissertation in Clinical Psychology: Treating depressed children: An integrative psychoanalytically based approach to the treatment of depressed latency aged children.

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC  (Hahnemann University) Masters degree research: “Graphic Indicators of Depression in the Artwork of Adults with Mild to Moderate Mental Retardation”. Ms. MacGregor has clinical experience with children, adolescents and adults with mental illness and addictions. She teaches the art therapy portion of Creative Arts Therapy Workshop. Ms. MacGregor is the current president of the Delaware Valley Art Therapy Association and has a private practice.

Tina Montagna-Tate, M.A., ATR-BC, LPC, Adjunct Clinical Instructor (MCP Hahnemann University), Master’s degree research: “Drawing Stories: Using Storytelling and Art Therapy with Children.” Clinical experience with adults in acute psychiatric treatment. Certification in School Counseling in progress.  Ms. Montagna-Tate teaches Art Therapy Literature and Research course.  Ms. Montagna-Tate has also served as a  guest lecturer, individual clinical art therapy supervisor, and  as a thesis advisor.  She is currently in private practice.

Michelle Rattigan, M.A., ATR, NCC, LPC, Adjunct Clinical Instructor (Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University).  Master’s degree research: “Art Therapy with Women Experiencing the Change of Life.” Ms. Rattigan has experience conducting group art therapy and group psychotherapy as well as individual art therapy in an inpatient psychiatric facility and most recently in her private practice. She has experience with a wide range of  clinical populations including women with post-partum depression, individuals who have eating disorders and those who suffer from dissociative disorders. In addition to her private practice and teaching, Ms. Rattigan is a practicing and exhibiting artist.  She serves on master’s thesis committees and supervises art therapy  students. Ms. Rattigan teaches the Group Dynamics:  Art Therapy course.

Ann Hopkins Wilson, MFA, ATR-BC, LPC (University of Pennsylvania), Post-Master’s Certificate (Hahnemann University). Ms Wilson  is an art therapist who specializes in art therapy with adults in an acute psychiatric setting.  Ms. Wilson is also a professional artist. Ms. Wilson has been a professional artist for over twenty years and taught Fine Arts in the Philadelphia area for fifteen years.  Her artwork is represented by the Rosenfeld Gallery of Philadelphia.  She has been a practicing art therapist for the past twelve years. In addition to her clinical practice in art therapy, Ms Wilson has presented locally and nationally on art and art therapy approaches and she has received grants for art therapy research as well as for her own artwork.  She received the Active Artist Award from the Delaware Valley Art Therapy Association in 2006.  She has been a site supervisor for Drexel University since 2000.
