Come to Writing Boot Camp to help get your proposal, dissertation or research papers into the best shape possible! The Boot Camp will run Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks starting Tuesday, July 22.

For live interactive viewing:
  1. Log into BBlearn
  2. Click on "Tech Support"
  3. In "Collaborate" tab, see "First Time Users" instructions. It will ask you to update your Java if needed and have you run a speaker/ microphone test.

    You will be able to join up to an hour before the session (11 a.m. EST)
Sessions will also be available later for archived viewing.

The Tuesday sessions will focus on a topic that is critical to obtaining the best product possible, while the Thursday sessions will provide a time to work on that particular application with feedback.

The Tuesday sessions will provide FREE LUNCH. The Thursday sessions will include FREE SNACKS.

There will be prizes given out at the different sessions. You will receive a raffle ticket at each session attended to be entered into a drawing at the end of the Boot Camp.

While we encourage you to attend whether you RSVP or not, we do ask that if you plan to attend the sessions you email dgwiseboard@gmail.com with your name, program and what you are interested in learning so that we can ensure we have enough food and that everyone gets as much out of the Boot Camp as possible.

A detailed schedule of the topics can be seen be below:

WEEK 1: How to best utilize the library
  • Tuesday, July 22: Jay Bhatt will discuss topics relating to running systematic literature searches, literature reviews, how to pick the best target journal etc.
  • Thursday, July 24: Dan Driscoll will be present to briefly discuss the resources that the Writing Center has to offer and Jay Bhatt will present the advantages of using Endnote and how to set it up. We encourage you to attend this session with some research goals in mind and capitalize on utilizing the expertise of both of the speakers. 
WEEK 2: How to best verbally portray your research
  • Tuesday, July 29: Dr. Lawrence Souder will both lecture and run participant exercises on how to strategically use citations, techniques for reviewing the research collected and how to interpret and describe your results.
  • Thursday, July 31: We will be running a writing session, we encourage you to bring specific writing goal (e.g a section of your background for you dissertation) and use this time to write. We will have people on hand to help with the reviewing the writing as well.
Week 3: How to best visually portray your research
  • Tuesday, August 5: Kristy Jost will present on the story telling aspect of communicating research; she will discuss best practices for making figures, posters, and presentations through different mediums.
  • Thursday, August 7: We encourage you to use this time to work on a schematic, figure, poster etc. We will have people on hand to help both technically and to discuss what is most visually appealing.
Week 4: Panel Discussion
  • Tuesday, August 12: We will have a panel discussion with young professors, post-docs, and students writing their dissertations or proposals currently. This will be an opportunity to gain insight from people that are have recently or are currently going through the same struggles as you. This will also be the day we draw our grand prizes.
