Maintaining Efficient Homes

The University offers workshops on energy efficiency and sustainable home renovations, including a partnership with the Mark Group to provide free home energy audits for employees.

Drexel is working with other nonprofits to provide energy audits, weatherization and healthy home renovations for local homeowners.  In 2012 and 2013, Drexel participated in “Green Block Builds” in Mantua, in partnership with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP).  Rebuilding Together Philadelphia works to preserve affordable home ownership and revitalize neighborhoods.  The Green Block Builds brought over 300 volunteers to work with up to 20 existing homeowners on each block. Volunteers installed storm water management planters, built downspout planters, cleaned up the landscape, helped with documentation issues, educated homeowners on healthy homes, energy efficiency and home maintenance, and assisted with budget counseling and education. Residents also received eco-friendly “cool” roofs installed on top of RTP’s new roofs, and membership to the West Philadelphia Tool Library for a year. Partners for the Green Block Build included RTP, People’s Emergency Center (PEC) CDC, SCI-West (a LISC collaboration in West Philadelphia), LISC, Partnership CDC, West/Southwest Neighborhood Advisory Council, and the Energy Coordinating Agency.
