Biography

Maria Hnaraki is the founding Director of Greek Studies at Drexel University and the author of Cretan Music: Unraveling Ariadne’s Thread. She holds a Diploma of Art in Music Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and a MA and a PhD in Ethnomusicology, Folklore and Cultural Anthropology from Indiana University-Bloomington. Additionally, she has a Piano Soloist Diploma from the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens and degrees in Theory, Pedagogy and Music Education from the National Conservatory of Athens. She has received numerous awards and has extensively presented in international conferences, published book reviews and articles, as well as instructed and performed Mediterranean music and dance. In addition, she has created and now directs the experiential “Study Abroad in Crete” Program.
