Dr. Kevin G. Owens, former graduate student Richard C. King III, and Bruce N. LaPrade Were Recently Granted US Patent
December 22, 2004 — Dr. Kevin G. Owens, Associate Professor of chemistry, former graduate student Richard C. King III, and Bruce N. LaPrade (Burle Electro-Optics, Inc., Sturbridge MA), were recently granted US patent # 6,828,729 (issued December 7, 2004) entitled, "Bipolar Time of Flight Detector, Cartridge and Detection Method". The patent is for development of an improved microchannel plate-based detector for use in time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The detector yields better high mass detection sensitivity through a combination of conversion surface coatings and a unique optically isolated high voltage post-acceleration design. The detector is commercially manufactured by Burle Electro-Optics (Sturbridge, MA) and is available from Burle, Inc. (www.burle.com).
