Tim Gorichanaz in The Conversation: Celebrating One Year of ChatGPT and Unveiling the Human Connection Behind AI

Launched on Nov. 30, 2022, ChatGPT took the AI world by storm, marking a breakout year for artificial intelligence. Going viral within days, the chatbot saw unprecedented success, surprising even its creator, OpenAI. By January 2023, ChatGPT reached 13 million daily users, setting a record for the fastest-growing consumer application. However, its journey also highlights the influence of a good interface, the perils of hype, and the emergence of new human behaviors. As generative AI systems like ChatGPT become pervasive, the technology's impact on society is as much about how people perceive and use it as the technology itself. OpenAI now claims 100 million weekly users, making ChatGPT a significant force in shaping the intersection of AI and human experience.

College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) Assistant Teaching Professor Tim Gorichanaz, PhD '18 shares his perspective in The Conversation on lessons learned from the first year of ChatGPT, and what the future may hold for this technology.
