The Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the international honor society for the computing and information disciplines, recently selected BS in Computer Science student Vũ Bùi and PhD in Computer Science student Josep Valls-Vargas as recipients of 2015 UPE Special Recognition Awards.

Bùi and Valls-Vargas, who will each receive $1,500 as part of the award, were among eight undergraduate and graduate students selected for Special Recognition Awards.

Bùi and Valls-Vargas are members of Drexel University’s UPE Chapter (serving as president and treasurer, respectively). Drexel was chartered in 1989 as the Epsilon Chapter of the State of Pennsylvania to the Association by the Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, and is now one of over 270 colleges and universities around the world that have a UPE chapter. The chapter is advised by CCI Professor Jeffrey Popyack, PhD.

Each year UPE’s Executive Council evaluates a large number of scholarship applications from students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. All scholarship applicants are required to complete a comprehensive application form including a statement on their long-term plans for the profession, a summary of their contributions to their respective UPE chapters and related student activities at their college or university. Applicants are also required to submit all college-level transcripts and a recommendation from the UPE faculty adviser.

Founded at Texas A&M University in 1967, UPE is an honorary society for students, faculty and computing professionals who exhibit superior scholastic and professional achievement in the computing & information disciplines, and is the only existing international honor society within those disciplines.
