On August 28, 1996, Bill Clinton announced the America Reads Challenge. This challenge was an unprecendented initiative that calls on all US citizens to support teachers and to ensure that every American child can read well by the third grade.
America Counts was modeled after the succesful America Reads Program in December of 1999. The America Counts Program is aimed at increasing the mathematical abilities of children in both elementary and middle schools.
The America Reads/America Counts Programs at Drexel University is primarily a group of college work study and volunteer students (as well as some faculty and staff) who assist children in developing better math and reading skills.
Tutors are provided with the training and the materials needed to help children with their math and/or reading skills. Tutors work individually or with a small group of students. Our goals are to be mentors to the children and to help each child develop a love of reading and/or a love of math.
Training is provided by Philadalphia Reads. Click here for more information about Philadelphia Reads.
Children in Philadelphia elementary schools as well as several non-school based programs receive tutors from the America Reads/Counts Program which is housed at the Center City Hahnemann Campus.
Individuals who wish to be considered as America Reads/America Counts tutors are not expected to be reading or math specialists. However, they must exhibit a strong desire to help children and have the ability to consistently volunteer two hours per week to tutoring. All individuals will be interviewed by a member of the America Reads/America Counts Program. In addition, ALL eligible tutors must undergo criminal background and child abuse checks.
America Reads Application Fill out this application to become an America Reads and/or America Counts tutor. You will also need a Child Abuse History Clearance and a Criminal Record Check. When you start tutoring, we will reimburse you for the fees.
APPLICATIONS are available in the Center for Academic Success, first floor of the New College Building, Room 1602.
