Non-Traditional Student Week


The Office of University Student Life at Drexel University, Center City Hahnemann Campus recognizes our Non-Traditional Students every November during National Non-Traditional Students Week by celebrating with a variety of activities.

Who are non-traditional students?
A non-traditional student or adult learner can be defined in many different ways.  It can be a student who is married or single, raising a family, changing careers, attending college after several years in the work force, etc.  Non-traditional students are unique because of the multiple roles they assume while attending college.

And the winners are...
The winners of this year's annual Non-Traditional Student Week Essay Contest have been announced! Congratulations for a fantastic job and special thanks to all our contestants!

“Why College, Why Now?” Essay Contest
Submit a brief essay about being a non-traditional student for a chance to win cash prizes!  Submission deadline is November 5.  Email essay entries to lcs42@drexel.edu or drop them off at NCB 1106. Click here or scroll down for more details.
Not Just Crazy, But NUTS! 
Monday & Thursday, November 5 & 8
11:00am to 1:00pm in Klahr Lobby

Not the Usual Traditional Students should stop by Klahr Lobby for some fun!  Make buttons, enjoy a nutty treat, watch “Old School,” and gather info on child care, time management, work stress, & more.
Non-Traditional Student Reception
Tuesday, November 6
3:00pm to 5:00pm in New College

Casual reception with refreshments in the New College Building.  Relax and socialize while enjoying some treats with fellow Non-Trads.  And find out the winners of the essay contest!
Essay Contest Details
Are you a Non-Tradtional Student?...TELL US ABOUT IT!
This year's essay contest topic is “Why College, Why Now?”
Write a brief 350-500 word essay about your experience juggling family, career, and college. Cash prizes will be awarded!!! A committee will review the essay entries, and the winners will be announced at the Non-Traditional Student Reception on Thursday, November 8th.
1st Prize: $150.00
2nd Prize: $100.00
3rd Prize: $75.00
Submit your essay to the University Student Life Office on the first floor of the New College Building in Suite 1106, or email it to lcs42@drexel.edu.

Here are some of the topics to consider writing about in your essay:

  • Who are you (how do you define yourself as a non-traditional student)?
  • Who/what influenced your decision to go to school?
  • Why college and why now?
  • How did your family, friends, children react when you told them you were going to college?
  • What was your first experience that made you feel like a non-traditional student?
  • What were your expectations and were they met?
  • How you have learned to succeed and cope as a non-traditional student?
  • Where are you going next?
